Top 5 Essentials for a Healthy Summer at Home
Your snowpants and thick sweaters are packed away. You bought new flip-flops and stocked up on fresh t-shirts. Summer is here, and you’re ready—almost. Before you hit the beach this season, make sure you’ve prepared your home to work in favor of your wellness and not against it.
5 Summer Wellness Tips
We’re shaking off the cobwebs from the chilly seasons, and it’s time for fun in the sun. With a little extra preparation, you can ensure that you and your family stay healthy through the months. Here are five things we recommend doing to protect your wellness throughout the summer.
1. Declutter Your Home
One thing we all love about summer is that it can feel like a fresh start. This makes it the perfect time to not only clean your home from top to bottom but take inventory of all of your belongings and ditch anything you don’t use—whether you pitch it, recycle it, sell it, or donate it.
Remember that this isn’t only about aesthetics. Piles of clutter create more surfaces for dust. Even worse, certain pests love making a home in dark and warm places.
This is also a great time for those chores you only do sporadically throughout the year, like changing the filters in your air purifiers, along with your water filters. Other responsibilities might include:
-
Washing your windows inside and out.
-
Cleaning out your refrigerator.
-
Clearing the gutters.
-
Adjusting your ceiling fans and thermostats.
-
Checking your AC unit to ensure it’s still working optimally.
-
Changing your indoor HVAC filters.
If you don’t know how frequently you should be changing your HVAC filters, talk to a local professional to get on the proper schedule.
2. Enjoy the Fresh Air
We’re not telling you not to throw the windows open on a warm and sunny day. However, it might take more to improve your indoor air quality, especially since it’s typically worse than the outdoor air quality.
An air purifier captures contaminants like dust, hair, dander, mold spores, and other airborne particles that can compromise your health. For smaller areas or something more portable, the Sans Mini gets the job done.
The type of filtration matters. This is why we use a combination of a cleanable pre-filter, a medical-grade HEPA 13 filter, one pound of activated carbon, and UV-C light to not only capture contaminants but also ensure that they don’t continue to grow on the filters and make you sick.
Side note: If you deal with allergies, air purification will be particularly important for you!
3. Practice Safe Skin
Fact: Your body needs sunshine so that it can produce vitamin D. Another fact: The sun can also be damaging, and skin cancer is the most common type in the US and worldwide.
At a bare minimum, you should wear SPF on your face and neck every single day—yes, even when it’s cloudy and even when you’re indoors! While glass windows typically block UVB rays, more than half of UVA rays—which cause premature skin aging and can contribute to the growth of skin cancer—sneak through.
When you go outside, it’s ideal, although maybe not practical, to keep your arms and legs covered. If you don’t, be sure to reapply your sunscreen every two hours. This is especially important if you’re sweating a lot or you’re in and out of water.
Opt for SPF 50 or higher, and look for something water-resistant and broad-spectrum. Don’t forget sunglasses and a hat. Your scalp and hair need to be protected, too!
4. Level Up Your Water Quality
If you’re health-conscious enough to stay adequately hydrated, then we’re going to guess that you care about water quality, too. So, why quench your thirst with water that’s possibly loaded with microplastics, heavy metals, estrogen, fluoride, and who knows what else? These contaminants can harm your mental and physical health.
A water purifier is a must, as is a self-cleaning water bottle for when you’re on the go this summer. The Sans water technology leans on four-stage reverse osmosis (RO) water filtration plus UV-C light to give you water that’s up to 99% free from pollutants. Our self-cleaning water bottle utilizes UV-C light to clean not only the bottle itself but the H2O inside of it. It’ll keep your water hot for 12 hours and cold for 24 hours.
While most of us grew up with the rule of thumb to aim for eight glasses of water a day, there are many variables involved. For instance, individuals with a higher body weight will need more. Climate can also have an impact. If you live in the desert or at a high elevation, you’re probably going to need to drink more water.
5. Hydrate Like You Mean It
If you don’t add electrolytes to your water, you could be missing out on important minerals that will help you stay truly hydrated and nourished. For example, electrolytes help to regulate your blood pressure, control your fluid balance, and maintain the proper acidity in your blood.
But don’t go online and buy them just yet, because many brands add sugar, colors, flavoring, and other additives that ultimately hurt the quality of the product. The Sans electrolytes are pure and garbage-free, sourced from the Great Salt Lake of Utah. One container holds 200 servings.
Electrolytes are especially important when you sweat more, which means you lose more. (In fact, anything that causes dehydration—including vomiting—could mean that you’re low on electrolytes.) This summer, add them to your filtered water to avoid dehydration and fatigue.
After winter’s chilly temps and spring’s heavy clouds, we’re all looking forward to blue skies, sunshine, and feeling the warmth on our skin. Clean and clear out your home, set up your air and water purifiers, stay hydrated, mind your electrolytes, and apply SPF liberally. You’ll feel happy and energized all summer long.
